Message from the Head of Department
“Scientific Curiosity and a Human-Centered Future”
Dear Academicians, Esteemed Students, and Distinguished Visitors,
I warmly welcome everyone who steps through the digital doors of the Psychology Department at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Balıkesir University.
Established in 2018, our department has, within a relatively short period of time, embraced a dynamic and innovative academic approach that harmonizes the universal standards of psychological science with local values. Drawing strength from the long-standing academic tradition of our university, our department strives to be not merely an institution that transfers knowledge, but an academic ecosystem in which knowledge is produced, questioned, and transformed into societal benefit.
Scientific Perspective and Educational Philosophy
The fundamental pillar of modern psychology education—the development of a scientific perspective toward events and phenomena—constitutes our core teaching principle. For us, psychology education is not limited to memorizing theories found in textbooks; rather, it is a process of cultivating analytical thinking, drawing data-driven conclusions, and developing a critical mindset applicable to all aspects of life.
In this respect, our vision is not merely to graduate students, but to educate them as “future scientists” equipped with the ability to understand and interpret the world.
Student-Centered Education and Academic Depth
The educational philosophy of our department is founded upon a student-centered, democratic, and participatory approach. Our curriculum has been designed in accordance with international accreditation standards and covers major subfields such as Clinical Psychology, Social Psychology, and Experimental Psychology.
From the very first year of their undergraduate education, our students have the opportunity to engage closely with our academic staff, take part in research projects, and pursue the scientific questions that spark their curiosity.
Research Vision and Laboratory Facilities
Scientific research constitutes the lifeblood of our department. Our young and competent academic staff conduct original studies that contribute meaningfully to the international scientific literature.
Our aim is to increase the number of projects supported by national and international funding bodies (such as TÜBİTAK and European Union programs) and to position Balıkesir as an important hub for psychological research. Throughout this process, we adhere to the principles of open science and place academic integrity and ethical values at the forefront of all our activities.
National and International Collaborations
In order to ensure and enhance the quality of education, our department is pursuing the accreditation process of the Turkish Psychological Association (TPA) with great determination. This process reflects our pursuit of excellence across all domains, from curriculum design and laboratory infrastructure to faculty competence and student satisfaction.
In addition, through Erasmus+ programs, we offer our students the opportunity to spend a semester or an academic year at various universities across Europe. This experience significantly enhances their cultural competencies while enabling them to establish international academic networks.
